Superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s latest release, Dunki, is making steady strides at the box office as it approaches the end of its theatrical run. On its 20th day, the comedy-drama is raking in approximately Rs 1 crore daily, according to industry tracker Sacnilk, with Tuesday’s earnings standing at Rs 1.3 crore.
Despite an initial boost during the holiday season, the film seems to have lost momentum, reflecting in its domestic total of Rs 219.27 crore. While this falls short of Shah Rukh’s previous releases like Jawan and Pathaan, both grossing over Rs 1000 crore globally, Dunki has still managed to secure a worldwide gross of Rs 447.70 crore as of Monday, according to Red Chillies Entertainment.
Looking ahead, Dunki sets its sights on breaking the global record of Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots, which earned Rs 460 crore in 2009. Although surpassing this benchmark seems likely, Dunki is expected to fall short of Hirani’s last film, Sanju, which amassed Rs 588 crore worldwide in 2018.
On the global stage, Dunki aims to rival Salman Khan-Katrina Kaif’s Tiger 3, which garnered Rs 464 crore last year. Despite facing competition with Salaar and receiving mixed audience reviews, Dunki’s achievement of reaching the Rs 450 crore mark is commendable, especially considering the high expectations associated with a Rajkumar Hirani directorial. However, it remains a bit of a disappointment in contrast to the explosive box office trends of 2023, largely fueled by Shah Rukh’s own contributions.
