In the heart of Chennai, a somber mood envelops the city as it bids adieu to the legendary actor-politician, Captain Vijayakanth. At the age of 71, the founder of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) succumbed to illness today, marking the end of a remarkable journey that seamlessly blended a flourishing film career with impactful political leadership.
Vijayakanth’s charismatic presence transcended the silver screen, gracing 154 movies during his successful film career. However, his story took a turn as he transitioned from reel to real life, venturing into the realm of politics by founding the DMDK in 2005. His commitment to public service and the welfare of Tamil Nadu became evident as he served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly twice, representing the constituencies of Virudhachalam and Rishivandiyam.
In recent times, concerns about his health had led Vijayakanth to reduce his active involvement in politics. His battles with various health issues, exacerbated by a positive COVID diagnosis, eventually led to his hospitalization. Despite the best efforts of medical staff and ventilatory support, the morning of December 28, 2023, witnessed the end of an era in Tamil Nadu politics.
Vijayakanth’s political zenith was marked by his tenure as the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from 2011 to 2016. A testament to his leadership skills and the impact he made on the political landscape of the state.
